Fish Oils and Autism – Why They Are So Important For a Childs Development and How To Select The Best
There has been much discussion recently concerning fish oils and autism, and with more scientific evidence showing how important they can be, it is crucial to select the right one for maximum effectiveness and safety.
Scientists have found that over two-thirds of those with autism, which restricts the ability to communicate and make sense of the world, have a deficiency in the crucial omega 3 fatty acids which shows how quality fish oils and autism are a perfect fit.
Omega 3 fatty acids, mainly DHA and EPA, play a key role in the health of a child’s neurological development with DHA being responsible for most of the benefits and no surprise when you consider than over 30% of an adult brain is composed of DHA fats!
In a recent study by two American researchers (Patrick-Salik), children diagnosed with autism were given a daily supplement of fish oil/borage for 90 days. At the end of 90 days, the children on the fish oil supplements showed significant improvements in their language and learning abilities.
Fish oil is the very best source of DHA as plant based versions like flaxseed oils give ALA and borage oil GLA both of which affect the body in different ways and are rarely converted into the more useful DHA.
The main areas of improvement that show just how fish oils and autism are intertwined are general comprehension, verbal ability, better sleep patterns and for those that are hyperactive these oils can have a considerable calming effect.
Many scientists have noted that children with autism generally have lower levels of these essential fatty acids in their brains and though not conclusive, it does show a pattern. The reason they are called essential is that our bodies cannot manufacture them so they must come from our diet.
It is estimated that over 90% of us a deficient in them so we should all increase our intake of these oils and with restrictions on how much fish we should eat, a supplement is the ideal solution.

If you select a high quality pure oil you shouldn’t have any problems giving it to your kids. These should only have a faint ocean aroma and I cut one open each morning and put it in my son’s apple juice and have never had a complaint!
Poor quality ones will give fishy burps and many objections and I don’t recommend ones specially for kids either as they are less effective and contain many additives. Look for one with a ratio of 2:1 DHA to EPA with at least 250mg of DHA per capsule to reap the rewards, with one a day recommended.
For children it is vital the oils they have been molecularly distilled to remove toxins like mercury and lead which many low quality ones can contain, just check the label or website carefully.
Fish oils and autism are obviously made for each other and with the right one you can really make an impact on your child’s development and future potential.
